Venezuelan artist Irene Pressner takes her subject matter from original tattoos and from popular comic strip characters of the 1940s. The surface of the waxy layers of encaustic, an ancient technique described by the Roman philosopher Pliny, and their pink backgrounds contribute to their uncanny resemblance to actual tattoos, a non-verbal communication about personal identity.
