Tremain Smith, whose work is included in the Metropolitan Museum in Manhattan and other prestigious collections, views multiple strata of oil glazes, collaged elements and transparent beeswax of her paintings as “mappings of the unseen where the physical and spiritual meet,” a medium for communication with the souls of the living and those of our ancestors. Through her mixed-media processes, she seeks to “create a texture and depth that draws the viewer into the substance and spirit beneath the surface… to paint compelling works of art that create access to the spiritual world.” Influences that have inspired her include ancient systems of divination related to the forces of nature and the spiritual aspects of the earth, and the cycle of decay and renewal in her urban environment.
