ART REVIEW

Color is everything for Leon Berkowitz, one of the original participants in what is known as the Washington Color School.

Recent paintings by Berkowitz, on exhibit through July 8 at Virginia Miller Galleries, 3112 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove, explore his uses of color as both form and content.

The paintings are luminous—in blues and greens and reds—and the tones mix and swirl around and through each other. There is no attention called to the hand of the artist—it seems as though these works should have been airbrushed. But they were not. And yet there is no intrusion of technique.

MORRIS LOUIS, Kenneth Noland and Gene Davis are among the most famous of the Washington Color School’s first generation. Berkowitz’ reputation has been late in coming, although he has been painting along these lines for a good number of years.

The works are limited even though they are quite beautiful. They are contemplative pieces that grow on a viewer with time and do not require any overt work to be understood. But this lack of effort required from the viewer is precisely what limits their significance. There is no need to give, to explore, to delve. The surface level is rich and promising, but that’s all there is.
