Three Master Photographers in France

December 1984
Major works by Jacques Henri Lartigue —the youngest master photographer in the history of the medium — will be featured at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries from December 14 through January 14.
Along with important photos by Lartigue, many of whose most memorable images were made before his 12th birthday in 1906, the Coral Gables gallery also will exhibit works done in France by two other acknowledged masters of photography, Andre Kertesz and Robert Doisneau.
"Lartigue took photos of the people and events that amused him — early airplanes, auto races and his family having fun — and his work shows the spontaneity and humor of his boyish outlook," said Virginia Miller. "One of his photos inspired Cecil Beaton's costumes for the Ascot race scene in 'My Fair Lady'."
The first exhibition of Lartique's work in this country was organized by John Szarkowski at the Museum of Modern Art in 1962. Since then it has been shown in numerous museums and galleries throughout the world and has been the subject of scores of books and articles.
