The Lightmobile

The Lightmobile was demonstrated at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries, Coral Gables, Florida, in the exhibition “Light Sources.” It is a 1967 VW “Beetle” model covered with 1,659 tiny three-watt lights operated by a computer. This is a creation of Eric Staller, a 40-year-old New York-based architect-photographer-sculptor, who is obsessed with moving lights.

"I always think of the sunset as my competition."
Artist Eric Staller

“An artist must express the culture and the time in which he or she lives,” Staller says, “and electricity is the material of our times.” It took him five months and $20,000 to create it, and he has priced the vehicle at $80,000. “I decided to take a step forward and to make my own UFO (unidentified flying object).” Although clearly it doesn’t take off, he did not have to make an airplane for the authorities to attempt to fine him twice because of its flashing lights. On both occasions a judge declared him blameless, as the lights are not a threat to safety.

On one occasion when a police officer insisted on Staller turning off the flashing lights, a nearby crowd sided with the artist, shouting: “Turn it on, turn it on!” When he did, they applauded him.
